Can your finances survive the recession?

By VICKIE MOSS, Herald Public Affairs Editor

It’s possible to “recession-proof” your finances, a credit counseling educator says.

Robert Baker, director of education for Housing & Credit Counseling Inc., will offer financial tips and advice at a special presentation of Parents University 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Washburn Towers community room, 526 S. Main St., Ottawa.

Baker will discuss the ways to save money, budgeting strategies and how to get through difficult economic times.

“More and more people are concerned about stretching their dollars,” Baker said. “I would hope that anybody who attends the class will have learned at least one good thing that will help them free up some money in their budget.”

Baker conducts financial seminars throughout Kansas and said events like Parents University help people learn about resources like credit counseling. People who attend the seminar are more likely to reach out for help when financial issues first arise, rather than waiting until the situation snowballs and options are more limited, he said.

Registration for Parents University is from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday. The program begins at 9 a.m.

Childcare is provided for children ages 5 to 12. Parents and children 12 and older will attend the seminar together.

Parents University is sponsored by the Franklin County Children’s Coalition. Housing & Credit Counseling Inc., Topeka, is a non-profit agency that offers consumer credit counseling services in northeast Kansas.
