Ottawa planners OK residences at former Town & Country building

By VICKIE MOSS, Herald Public Affairs Editor

Ottawa City commissioners gave Ted Fogle the green light Wednesday to build a residence inside his business building.

But Fogle said he hopes he doesn’t need to do that.

Fogle asked the city to allow him to convert up to half of a building at 2707 Kingman Road to a residence.

The building, on the outskirts of the city limits along U.S. 59, has become a target for burglars and thieves, Fogle said, and he wants someone to live in the building as a security precaution.

But he’d prefer to find a business to rent the building.

Finding someone interested in the building has been tough to do in the current economy, Fogle said.

“I just can’t see that happening,” he said previously. “I just want to try to get somebody out there to protect the property. It’s dark, and there’s nothing around that area at all.”

The building has been empty since the previous tenant, Town & Country, moved out this past spring. The building was built to house Windy Pines, a landscaping business owned by the Fogles until they retired in 2005.

Thieves have stolen copper wiring and plumbing from the building, Fogle said. That’s why he asked the city to approve a conditional-use permit to allow him to renovate part of the building into a residence.

City planners and commissioners asked Fogle to make upgrades to the sanitation system and separate the commercial and residential areas.
