By The Herald Staff

Former Ottawa University football player and assistant coach Josh Gehring has been selected the American Football Coaches Association 2009 NAIA assistant coach of the year.

Gehring is the Morningside College offensive coordinator.

The Morningside offense ranks third in the NAIA in points at 49.6 points per game. The squad averages 496 yards per game, which ranks sixth in the NAIA.

Morningside (9-1) will play Saturday at home in the NAIA playoffs against Missouri Valley.

Gehring has developed and implemented a leadership development program for incoming freshman athletes with the purpose of building character, developing leadership skills and building a foundation for academic success.

Gehring was on the 1997 Ottawa team, the first to qualify for the NAIA playoffs. He graduated in 1999.

He has been the defensive coordinator at Concordia University and assistant coach at Missouri State, Western Kentucky, Manchester and Ottawa.

All of the assistant coach of the year recipients will be honored Jan. 11 at the AFCA Kickoff Luncheon in Orlando, Fla.
