City photo contest captures Ottawa shutterbugs’ talents

Cindy McCurdy likes to take pictures of her grandkids sitting with flowers.

So when she heard about a photo contest sponsored by the City of Ottawa’s Planning and Codes Administration, she thought it would be fun to submit a photograph of her 2-year-old grandson hamming it up amid gourd plants.

It was the first time McCurdy had entered a photography contest, and her picture was selected as the overall winner in a category reserved for city employees.

“I was excited,” McCurdy said about the honor. “I’ve never won anything like that before.”

McCurdy and other winners were recognized Wednesday evening at the regular meeting of the Ottawa planning and zoning board.

Some winners were recognized Wednesday morning at a city commission meeting, including Warren Smith, who received the Mayor’s Choice award for a photograph of Tauy Jones Hall at Ottawa University.

Smith also was recognized for a photograph of the OU football team and said he enjoyed taking photos of the university.

Sixteen people submitted 59 photographs in the second annual contest. Residents, youth and city employees were asked to capture images of Ottawa, including places, landscapes and events.

Photos will be part of a presentation on the Government Access Channel and are on display at City Hall/Ottawa Library, 101 S. Hickory St., until Friday. They may be displayed elsewhere in the community after Friday, city officials said.

Winners included:

• Overall citizen older than 19: Jan Smith for “A Home with a View” in the Landscape and Nature category. She received $75.

• Overall youth: Samantha Lee for “Peace” in the Landscape and Nature category. She received $50.

• Overall city employees: Cindy McCurdy for “Garden Delight” in the Landscape and Nature category. She received vacation leave.

• Places and Buildings: Craig Carlson, Kimberly Tate and Samantha Lee.

• Events and Activities had several winners because of tie scores: Bev Deardorff, Warren Smith, Jackie Bigham, Sara Humm, Craig Carlson and Chuck Bigham.

• Mayor’s Choice: Warren Smith for “Heritage.”
