Big hitters highlight Herald's all-area defense

By Greg Mast/Herald Sports Editor

The 2009 Herald all-area defensive team members were sure tacklers. They had a knack of being in the right place at the right time.

Here are the top 11 defensive players:

Cody Chambers, LB, Anderson County

Chambers was the second-leading tackler for the Bulldogs and led the team with 22 solo stops. The senior averaged nearly seven tackles per game. He also led the Pioneer League in fumble recoveries with four.

JD Johnson, LB, Central Heights

Johnson was one of the top tacklers for the Vikings, who won their district for the third straight season. He averaged five tackles per game. The senior had three quarterback sacks and caused three fumbles and recovered two.

Skye Mills, DB, Central Heights

Mills is one of the top all-around athletes in the area. Mills was the leader of the offense and defense and was a weapon on special teams.

On offense, Mills passed for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns.

He is a two-time all-area selection.
