Grant to help fund construction of new fire station in Anderson County

By The Herald Staff

Anderson County will get almost $300,000 from the state to help build a new fire station in Colony, southwest of Garnett.

The Kansas Department of Commerce has announced a grant of $296,884 as part of its KAN STEP self-help program to enable small, rural communities to make major infrastructure improvements.

Local volunteers expect to donate about $335,233 in equipment and labor toward the project, according to a news release.

The proposed fire station will cover about 6,300 square feet and will house a meeting room, safe room and space to park fire trucks as part of the program.

The department has awarded nearly $1.2 million in federal Kansas Small Towns Environment Program funding to the cities of Sterling and Mankato, as well as Pratt and Anderson counties.
