Lady Braves make move too late, fall to Haskell

By Greg Mast/Herald Sports Editor

LAWRENCE — Ottawa University women’s basketball coach Bruce Tate needed a spark Thursday as the Lady Braves were firing blanks.

He turned to the 5-foot-4 sharpshooter Jamee Leichtle. The freshman responded by scoring all 11 of her points in the final 7:23 to ignite the dormant Ottawa offense.

The Lady Braves fell behind by 28 with 10:37 left in the contest. Ottawa started hitting its outside shots, outscoring Haskell Indians Nations University 35-15, but it was not enough to pull out a victory.

Haskell held off Ottawa for the 73-65 win. Ottawa scored 35 points in the final 10 minutes after mustering just 30 in the first 30 minutes.

“It was a little too late,” Tate said. “We put something together in the second half. Jamee gave us a spark. She can score.”

Ottawa hit eight of its 10 treys in the last 10 minutes. The defense began to play better.

“We got better looks,” Tate said.

Through most of the first half, Ottawa had trouble converting after beating the Indian press.

Tate told his team before the game not to let the press speed them up, but it did.

The start of the second half saw Ottawa turn the ball over against the press, and it led to easy hoops. Haskell hit Ottawa with an 18-5 run to open a 50-26 lead.

Tate called it a roller-coaster ride.

“When things are going good, we are having fun,” he said. “When things go bad, we play scared. We don’t know how to react.”

Ottawa had 29 turnovers, 16 coming in the second half.

“We had mental breakdowns,” Tate said. “We need to take it one possession at a time.”

Ottawa shot 53 percent from the field in the second half and hit nine treys.

Sophomore Paige Gibson found her stroke late. She hit three treys for nine of her 15 points in the last three minutes.

Ottawa (1-7) plays 2 p.m. Saturday at William Woods.

Haskell (73) — Sun Eagle 3, George 19, Davis 12, Parker 17, Burtt 2, Begay 1, Belone 11, Stevens 3, Keo 2, Little Sun 2.

Ottawa (65) — Gibson 15, Stone 7, Hartzler 5, Smith 3, Mueller 7, Leichtle 11, Hasenkamp 5, Buckles 3, Post 5, Sprew 4.
