Lady Braves basketball ends 4-game skid

LEAVENWORTH — The Ottawa University women’s basketball team was determined to end its four-game skid.

The Lady Braves came through from the free-throw line to stave off Johnson and Wales, 71-66, Saturday in the University of Saint Mary Classic.

The Lady Braves came through from the free-throw line to stave off Johnson and Wales, 71-66, Saturday in the University of Saint Mary Classic.

Ottawa was coming off a 72-67 loss Friday to Central Methodist. That game was tied 11 times.

The Lady Braves turned 20 turnovers into a 24-15 advantage in points off turnovers in Saturday’s game.

Ottawa hit 14-of-17 from the free-throw line and outscored Johnson and Wales 14-8 from the line.

Ottawa, which trailed 35-34 at halftime, outscored Johnson and Wales, 37-31, in the second half. Ottawa used a 28-14 advantage in the paint.

Ottawa shot 44 percent from the field and hit 7-of-18 shots from behind the arc.

Amber Ramsey had her second straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists.

Shauna McClure tied her career high with 25 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor.

Central Methodist held on to defeat Ottawa. Central Methodist was 10-of-12 from the line in the second half.

Ottawa placed three players in double figures. Senior Lauren Buckles led Ottawa with 18 points. Ramsey had 14 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and three steals. April Dowell tallied 12 points.

Ottawa (2-5) plays today in Kansas City, Mo., against Avila.
