Federal government offices

For Social Security services, people in Franklin County are referred to Social Security's Lawrence office at 1440 Wakarusa Drive.

The toll-free number is (866) 271-7580.

Other federal offices:

  • The U.S. Post Service, 401 S. Hickory St. Phone: (785) 242-2000. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Outgoing mail should be in the inside box by 5:15 p.m. or the outside boxes by 6 p.m. The lobby is open 24 hours a day. Besides mail, the office can handle passports.

Besides the collection box in the lobby and in the alley behind the post office, there are also postal collections boxes at the Franklin County Annex, 1418 S. Main St.: Country Mart, 2100 S. Princeton Circle; Wal-Mart SuperCenter, 2101 S. Princeton St.; Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main St.; the Ottawa Co-op, 302 N. Main St.; and 200 S. Main St.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Service Center, 107 E. 23rd St., (785) 242-3260. The center houses two USDA agencies -- the Farm Service Agency, which administers farm crop support programs, and the National Resources Conservation Service, which administers farm environmental and conservation programs.

  • The head office of the six-county Lake Region Rural Conservation and Development is at 121 E. Second St., (785) 242-2073. However, plans call for the office to be moved to the USDA Service Center. The USDA pays for the RC&D employees and an office but much of the office's work is funded by federal, state and other grants.

The office helps pull together areawide community development projects. For example, the office funded a study of Franklin County fire departments and is working on a plan to distribute used and discarded, but rebuilt bicycles, to needy children.
