Police urge responsible holiday driving

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

Lt. Adam Weingartner doesn’t want pride or convenience to endanger someone’s life.

But Weingartner, with the Ottawa Police Department, said those two things often do — when someone chooses to drive after they’ve been drinking.

“Keep in mind that if you are going to be drinking any amount at all — don’t consider driving home,” Weingartner said.

In order to help prevent alcohol-related injuries or death over the Thanksgiving holiday, Weingartner said the Ottawa Police Department will be participating in the Kansas Thanksgiving Traffic Enforcement Campaign.

Thanks to a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation, more officers will be able to patrol area roadways Monday through Nov. 29, searching for impaired drivers and for children, teens and adults who are not properly restrained, Weingartner said.

“Always wear your seat belt and don’t move the vehicle until each person riding with you is restrained,” he said. “It is your best defense, it’s their best defense, and it’s the law.”

Weingartner said six people are injured or killed in alcohol-related crashes every day in Kansas.

“By always following these simple rules, you will safeguard your own life — and maybe the lives of others,” Weingartner said.
