‘New Moon’ not just for children; parents are fans, too

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

It’s been awhile since Micki Aguirre and her two children have all been interested in the same movie.

Then came the “Twilight” series — movies the whole family can enjoy together, she said.

“I enjoy having a common bond with them,” Aguirre, Wellsville, said of her two children, 13 and 15, who all are interested in the series.

Aguirre took her children to watch the latest installment in the series, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which debuted Friday in theaters throughout the area and country.

“My kids and I went Thursday at midnight. Well, I guess it was actually Friday by then,” Aguirre said.

Aguirre said the family opted to watch the flick at a theater in Olathe but watched the first movie in the series at home before becoming hooked.

“All of us liked it so much that we had to see this one at the theater,” she said.

Theaters in Kansas City and Lawrence began showing the movie Thursday, and area residents who didn’t get their fix the first time had the chance to watch it at The Crystal Plaza, 209 S. Main St., over the weekend.

The vampire romance “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” sucked up $140.7 million in its first three days and pulled in a total of $258.8 million worldwide, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The No. 1 domestic debut for Summit Entertainment’s “New Moon” was more than twice the $69.6 million haul over the same weekend last year for “Twilight,” the first in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels.

Aguirre said part of the movie popularity comes from parents — the series isn’t just for children, she said. In fact, many parents attended the movie premier, too, she said.

As an adult, Aguirre said the movies appeal to her because of the romance, but it’s different for her two children.

“The chemistry between the two main characters is what I like,” Aguirre said. “For my daughter, I am pretty sure it’s the dreamy boys. And my son, the action scenes are what he likes.”
