MARION CASSIUS COEN

Marion Cassius Coen, who died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at his Ottawa home, was born Aug. 24, 1926, at the Ottawa Community Hospital in Ottawa to Marian (Taylor) and Cassius Curtis Coen. His mother died at his birth, and his father died when he was 10.

He was raised by his aunts, Iva Jackson, and his mother’s twin sister, Mildred Taylor, who was known as “Grandma” by his children. He attended Lincoln Elementary and Ottawa Junior and Senior High School with the class of 1944.

He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served 18 months in Hawaii, completing his tour on Johnston Island in the Pacific servicing aircraft carriers.

Upon returning to Ottawa, he attended Ottawa University and farmed. He later worked at Ottawa Wholesale, Sheldon Truck & Tractor, Myers Motor Equipment and then 27 years at the Ottawa Post Office, retiring in 1987.

He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and his church family was an important part of his life. Marion was a former Boy Scout and 4-H leader and recently served on the board at the Ottawa Senior Center. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years.

On June 26, 1955, he married Peggy Kelsey. She survives. They moved to their farm on Louisiana Road in 1965. Marion loved living in the country, being outside and raising his family. Weekends were filled with grandkids, watching football, especially the Chiefs and the K-State Wildcats. He was very proud that of all his children and grandchildren are involved in their churches and value an education.

Besides his wife, he is survived by sons, John, and wife, Cherry, Wellsville, Jim and wife, Ann, Andover, Kan.; daughters, Janet McMurray and husband, Glenn, Hutchinson, Kan.; and JoLynn Gasper and husband, Carl, of Horton, Kan. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren. The four grandsons are Matt McMurray, Todd Coen and Ben and Sam Gasper. The eight granddaughters are Whitney Coen, Prairie Village, Kan., Katie (McMurray) Johnson and her husband, Josh, Wichita, Kan., Jessica Coen, Ottawa, Krista Coen, Kansas City, Mo., Chelsy Coen, Kelsey Coen, Kari Coen and Paige Gasper. Three surviving cousins are Eleanor Coen, Warren Coen and Winifred McPherson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 630 N. Cedar St., Ottawa, Kan. Interment will follow at Baxter Cemetery (Evergreen Mound). The family will meet and greet friends and relatives from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home.
