Unclaimed property list includes more than 4,000 county residents

By VICKIE MOSS, Herald Public Affairs Editor

Leanna Heth, Ottawa, had forgotten about a small amount of money owed to her from a savings account at a Lawrence credit union.

“It’s not a lot, but anybody could use what’s there,” she said.

Heth is among more than 4,000 Franklin County residents who have a total of $57,707.08 in unclaimed property.

The money is available through the unclaimed property division of the Kansas Treasurer’s Office. There are no fees or costs to obtain the property.

Anyone who believes they may be owed property can check the state’s Web site, www.kansascash.com . The site requires free registration, and can be searched by name.

The list of Franklin County residents who have unclaimed property also is available at the Franklin County Treasurer’s Office and Motor Vehicles office, both at the Franklin County Courthouse, 301 S. Main St., Ottawa. Information about the program also is available at those offices.

The list also is available here.

County Treasurer Debbie Hough said she encourages everyone to check the Web sites or stop in the offices to see if their name is on the list.

“Any little bit is helpful, especially this time of year,” Hough said.

As for the money owed to Heth, she said she plans to file a claim.
