Take a gander at those geese
Canada geese land in a field Monday morning by a pond near the Martin Marietta Materials quarry at the intersection of U.S. 59 and Montana Road. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism website, www.kdwpt.state.ks.us, says Canada geese once nested over a large part of the Great Plains. The geese population declined, however, with the settlement of the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During the past half-century, efforts have been made by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission to return the species to the area. Canada geese are now a more common sight across the state.
