WAMEGO — The Ottawa High School wrestling team had four place en route to a sixth-place finish Saturday in the Wamego Invitational.

The Cyclones were 12 points out of fourth place, despite four open weight classes.

Junior Dalton Weidl went 4-0 to win the 182-pound division. Hunter Peoples (145) was 3-1 and was runner-up. Mickey Jensen was runner-up at 285. Caleb Parenti (160) went 2-2 and was fourth.

“We wrestled well for our first matches of the season,” Ottawa coach Joe Tokarz said. “Dalton had a great day. He is becoming a force at 182.

“Mickey, Hunter and Caleb each wrestled well. The meet had some technical problems creating long delays between rounds and matches causing us to make adjustments, but we worked through.”

Tokarz said Ottawa should have a full lineup later in the season.

“We are still working on setting our lineup ... as the season progresses we are planning to have a full squad,” he said.

The coach saw a lot of positives from the season opener.

“Cale [Paquette] did not place, but had a fantastic day also,” Tokarz said.

He gave Junction City wrestler, a defending state champion, a good match before falling.

“I pleased with our underclassmen and 1st year wrestlers,” he said. “I believe everyone took something from the meet to be able to learn from.”
