Bruce sets OU mark in half-marathon

By The Herald Staff

FREMONT, Neb. — Ottawa University senior Hillary Bruce set a school record by placing in the top 25 runners Dec. 5 in the Midland Lutheran College Warrior half-marathon (13.1 miles) in Fremont, Neb.

Bruce’s time was 1 hour, 40 minutes and 32 seconds. She swept past the old school record of 1:55.51 set by Sarah Blecha.

This was Bruce’s first collegiate medal.

“This was an outstanding race for Hillary,” Ottawa coach Kirk Wren said. “She has never ran a race farther than a 6-kilometer race before (3.6 miles).

“She kept a consistent pace the whole way. She is a strong runner and has improved each year.”

Bruce was selected to the NAIA cross-country academic All-American team.

She is majoring in elementary education.

Bruce is 4:30 from qualifying for the NAIA national meet in May.
