A 16-year-old boy jumped Thursday afternoon from the west side of Ottawa’s Main Street Bridge, falling about 30-feet into the partially frozen Marais des Cygnes River, Ottawa police at the scene said.

The boy jumped off the bridge at about 12:43 p.m., Sgt. Doug Waterman, with the Ottawa Police Department, said, when air temperatures were at 35 degrees and the river’s temperature at about 45 degrees.

“Officers were driving south on Main Street Bridge and observed an individual on the sidewalk,” Waterman said. “As they were driving by, the individual jumped off the bridge into the river. He was able to get himself out of the river on his own power. Officers met him at the bank, helped him out, and now he is in the ambulance getting treatment and care.”

Franklin County Emergency Medical Services, as well as Ottawa police and fire departments, responded to the scene.

After falling what Waterman thought to be at least 30 to 40 feet, the boy was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Waterman speculated that the boy might have been suicidal, but was unable to speak with him.
