Fatality wreck still under investigation

By The Herald Staff

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into what caused a single-vehicle wreck Sept. 19 that claimed the life of one Ottawa man.

James Richey, 49, Ottawa, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 4300 block of Iowa Road near Centropolis. Richey was a passenger in a green GMC Envoy driven by Eric Davis, 25, Ottawa. Davis lost control of the vehicle on the gravel road and it rolled over, striking several trees before coming to rest on its side in a thicket near the road, according to a sheriff’s report.

Davis and a second passenger, Lance Geier, 23, Ottawa, were transported by air ambulance to area hospitals for treatment of what law enforcement officials described as traumatic injuries.

At the scene of the early evening crash, law enforcement officials said alcohol possibly could have played a role in the wreck, though that has not been determined.

“The crash is still under investigation,” Jerrod Fredricks, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office master deputy, said Thursday afternoon. “We are methodically looking at all the evidence and waiting for the results of lab work.”
