Ottawa area merchants are urged to watch closely for counterfeit bills.

At 11:46 a.m. Tuesday, a representative of Taco Bell, 2304 S. Princeton St., reported to authorities that a known subject tried to purchase items from the restaurant with counterfeit money, according to an Ottawa Police Department report.

The case remains under investigation. Information discovered during the investigation, police said, suggested suspects were printing/copying fake bills, and it was not clear how many counterfeit bills could still be in the area. The Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce distributed the police advisory to its members Wednesday morning via email.
