Many in the community may have noticed officers with the Ottawa Police Department looking different in November.

The department, for the first time, participated in No Shave November this year. As a movement, No Shave November encourages people to forgo shaving for the month of November, donating money otherwise spent on grooming supplies to charitable causes and using their new look as a conversation starter to raise cancer awareness.

“I am so proud of our staff for doing this,” said Adam Weingartner, Ottawa police chief. “We get so much support from this community that, when we get the chance to give back, it is a great reminder of why we serve.”

Proceeds from the Ottawa Police Department’s event were used to adopt a family for Christmas through ECKAN. The department provided a police escort Monday to deliver gifts to ECKAN.

The department raised $600 and used the money to purchase gifts for a family from Ottawa businesses, sending officers out to shop for the family.

“We wanted to participate in the No Shave November campaign and find a meaningful way to give back to the community," said officer Nick Goodwin, coordinator for the fundraiser. "The fundraiser was such a success that we are already planning to do the same thing in 2020 and hope to make this an annual tradition of paying it forward in our community.”

In addition to the police department, Municipal Judge James Campbell and the Ottawa Municipal Court staff donated $500 and adopted a family for Christmas, also through ECKAN. An undisclosed cash donation was also made to the family by members of the Ottawa Police Department Volunteers in Police Services.

“ECKAN was thrilled to accept this wonderful donation on behalf of families adopted by the Ottawa Police Department and Municipal Court,” said Crystal Anserson, ECKAN CEO. “We recognize that local law enforcement officers work daily to support this community — often at the expense of spending time with their own families. To see this above and beyond gesture during the holiday season is an amazing example of holiday spirit. Thanks Ottawa PD for spreading some Christmas cheer at ECKAN!”
