Francis L. Hoagland, 88, died on March 17, 2018.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1929, in Tipp City, Ohio, to Johnie Howard and Gladys Ruth (Frederick) Hoagland.
An ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene, the Rev. Hoagland and his wife, Julia Ann (Roberts) Hoagland, who was also ordained, pastored churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and New Mexico over the course of 45 years. They also participated in missionary work in Arizona, Mexico, and Peru. The Rev. Hoagland and his wife both graduated from the Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They moved to Kansas when retiring, and Francis has been a 15-year resident of Ottawa, Kansas.
The Rev. Hoagland’s interests were wide and varied over the course of his life, and included racing boats, building a hot rod, backpacking up 10,000 foot mountains, building flintlock rifles, and hand sewing his own historical reenactment clothes. Making a point to get to know those he met, and taking an interest in them personally, the Rev. Hoagland enjoyed conversation with lively stories and details.
The Rev. Hoagland is survived by his son Gary (Becki) Hoagland of McLouth, Kansas, his son Keith (Marcela) Hoagland of Aurora, Colorado, his daughter Denise Rene’ (Chuck) Stephenson of Guthrie, Oklahoma, his daughter Nancy (Harold Gaines) Hoagland of Wellington, Kansas; grandchildren Dakota, Cody, Shane, Wyatt, Jasmine, Nathanial (Amber), Morgan (Danielle), Zia and Hayden; and great-grandchildren Maverick, Zeke, Ezra, Theron and Lula. He is also survived by siblings Ruth Ella Shaffer, and Harvey (Olive) Hoagland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Julia, infant brother Leon Hoagland, brother David Hoagland.
Local Memorial Service will be Wednesday, March 21, at the Ottawa Church of the Nazarene, 633 S. Elm St., Ottawa, Kansas, with light supper at 6:30 p.m. and service at 7:15 p.m.
Funeral and interment will follow in Springfield, Ohio.
