Loren Edward Douthat, 82, Ottawa, Kansas, passed with his family by his side on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020.
Cremation is planned. Graveside services will be at Highland Cemetery at a later date. Loren was born May 17, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Richard W. and Ruth E. (Manuel) Douthat.
He was united in marriage to Karyn Holmes Aug. 22, 1960, in Des Moines, Iowa. She survives of the home.
He lived in various locations throughout his life, including Germany, California, Oregon, Eritrea, and Alaska. In the mid-1970s, after his military career, Loren moved his family to Ottawa.
He graduated from Southwest Harrison High School in Bethany, Missouri, with the class of 1956. He then attended the US Army Language School in Pacific Grove, California, studying Polish. He later continued his education at Emporia State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Education.
He served in the United States Army and Air Force, stationed in many locations. Later, he also served in the Navy Reserves in Olathe, Kansas.
Loren was employed as a field service engineer with General Electric from 1977 until his retirement in May 1998.
Loren always enjoyed building, working in his shop, and working on automobiles. Above all, he enjoyed his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dale Douthat.
Other survivors include three sons, Aaron (Chen Pei-Fen) Douthat, of San Diego, California; Rob Douthat, of Ottawa; David (Xann) Douthat, of Ottawa; three siblings, Mary Ellen (Kenneth) Jensen, of Cameron, Missouri; Margaret Ann Douthat, of Cameron, Missouri; Michael Douthat of Washington State; three grandchildren, Akilina Douthat, of Seattle, Washington; Kenneth Douthat, of Lawrence; Patrick Douthat, of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews.
