BURLINGTON — Both Central Heights and West Franklin High School raked in the medals in the first cross country meet of the season.

The Viking varsity boys placed second as a team Thursday at Burlington with four runners finishing in the top 20. West Franklin also had a strong showing, finishing fourth as a team with three runners in the top 20.

Caleb Meyer and Kyle Cardin placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the varsity boys 5K for Central Heights. Meyer’s time was 18:27, and Cardin finished on his heels, just four seconds behind. Tyler Stevenson finished with a time of 19:24, and Avery Stalford picked up a medal with a 19:43 time. Stevenson placed 13th, and Stalford 16th.

“We had a nice start to the season,” Troy Prosser, CH head cross country coach, said. “Pulling in 13 medals [overall] on a warm afternoon against some very stiff competition is a testament to how hard these kids have worked so far.”

West Franklin’s Dallin Bailey ran a blazing 17:13 time in his first race of his senior year. He finished second ahead of teammate Ryan Haner, who ran an 18:19, good enough for sixth place. Justin Downey rounded out the Falcon boy medalists with a 19:44 time to place 17th.

“Dallin and Ryan have been working hard all summer to push each other and you could see that in [Thursday’s] race,” Tara Huggard, WF head cross country coach, said. “They both ran strong. We lost a key runner from last year [Alex Walters, now running for Ottawa] so it is important that the rest of our boys team steps up to fill those shoes. I think today did a good job of showing them where they are at, and where they need to be by the end of the season.”

On the girls side, West Franklin’s Molly Rossman and Bailey Leach had big races to start the season. Rossman won varsity 5K with a time of 21:13. Leach finished fourth with a time of 22:47.

“They have pushed each other hard all summer and it will be fun to see what they can do this season,” Huggard said.

Both West Franklin and Central Heights will run 4 p.m. Thursday in the Lyndon Invitational at Melvern Lake.
