ATCHISON — The Ottawa University men’s lacrosse team suffered heartbreak in its season opener.

The Braves fell 11-10 Tuesday on a last-second goal at Benedictine College in Atchison.

Benedictine’s Peter Girard scored the game-winner with 1.9 seconds left in the fourth period, assisted by Tyler Santini.

Ottawa’s Pearson Willis, senior attacker, and Aidan Baker, junior midfielder, scored back-to-back goals in the fourth period to help the Braves take a 10-9 lead with 8:18 left.

Ryan Heinser knotted up the score with a goal at the 1:46 mark, setting up Girard’s game-winner.

Girard scored four goals for the Ravens. Baker led all scorers with seven goals, and Willis added OU’s other three goals.

Ottawa (0-1) begins a five-match home stand throughout the month noon Friday against No. 5 Missouri Baptist University at OU’s Peoples Bank Field.
