PAOLA — Spring Hill outscored Ottawa 26-9 in the second quarter en route to a sub-state win.
The Lady Broncos ended the Ottawa High School girls basketball season Thursday in the first round of sub-state with a 61-41 win at Paola High School.
Despite a tough loss, the Lady Cyclones play was much improved against the same team that beat them by 40 points the previous Friday. Ottawa was down 11-9 before Spring Hill’s strong second quarter. The Lady Broncos finished the first half on a 12-2 run that put them up 37-18 at the break.
“Our rebounding on the weak side bit us a couple of times, and that really hurt us,” Jamie Porter, OHS head girls basketball coach, said. “It wasn’t like the last game that we played against them. I told them I was very proud of them for coming out and playing hard.”
Kamryn Shaffer, senior, led all scorers with 22 points for the Lady Cyclones. She hit four three-point shots and was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Spring Hill’s Hailey Lovetinsky, senior, had 17 points.
It was the final prep game for seniors Amanda Wray, Shakiya Aho, Bailey Evans, Sutton Jung and Shaffer. The Cyclones finished 2-19.
“I told the girls to get out there and play for the seniors and don’t back down for anything,” Porter said. “I really felt like they put forth that effort and have done what I’ve asked for over the last several games.”
