The Madness has begun.

While the most jam-packed month of excitement for basketball fans continues this weekend, some players from within the state and around the area are worthy of noting. Whether these players are key contributors such as Kansas State’s Dean Wade and Wichita State’s Connor Frankamp and Landry Shamet, or well-known ballers from the area such as Creighton’s Mitchell Ballock, a dive into this year’s rosters of the NCAA DI Men’s Basketball Tournament teams shows numerous competitors native to Kansas (and the Kansas City area).

Wade leads the Wildcats in both points (16.5) and rebounds (6.3) per game. He has shot 55 percent from the field this season. Shamet averages 15 points per game and 5.1 assists per game for the Shockers and teammate Frankamp averages 10.1 points per game.

In his first collegiate season, Ballock has played in all 32 games, averaging seven points per game and shooting 42.6 percent from the field.

No. 11-seeded Loyola-Chicago upset No. 6 Miami University Thursday 64-62 on a buzzer beater. Clayton Custer and Ben Richardson, both of Blue Valley Northwest High School, have been key contributors this season. Custer is Loyola’s leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points per game and 4.2 assists per game.
