SALINA — Ottawa University split its fourth straight conference doubleheader Tuesday in Salina.

The Lady Braves (25-11, 8-4 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) came away with a 4-3 win in Game 2 against Kansas Wesleyan after stumbling 9-6 in the opener.

A three-run top of the fifth in Game 1 put OU on top 5-3. The Lady Braves were helped by a no-out throwing error on KWU with two on that scored Tomi-Lyn Hickman, freshman shortstop, from second.

The Lady Coyotes responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame, and four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ottawa got a run back in the top of the seventh on a throwing error, but had only two reach base in the failed rally.

Elena Cott-Laurie, junior catcher, hit a two-RBI single in the top of the third inning in Game 2 to give her team a 3-1 lead. Three fielding errors allowed KWU to score a run in the bottom of the fifth that cut OU’s lead to 4-3. The Lady Coyotes had Sierra Martinez representing the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but she was picked off. Two batters later, Jordan Matheney popped out to end the game.

Ottawa plays 2 p.m. Friday at Bethany College in a rescheduled doubleheader from April 7. Bethany (13-29, 4-8 KCAC) has been in a free-fall, losing seven of its last eight games. The team has been outscored 65-23 in that span.
