Franklin County saw more than half of the prep wrestlers who competed in their respective regional meets this weekend earn a trip to state. Eleven wrestlers between Ottawa High School and Wellsville High School wrestled their way into the top four, with a pair of third-place finishes, eight runner-up finishes and one individual regional champion.

PAOLA — The Cyclones claimed the regional title Saturday, edging second-place Eudora by eight-and-a-half points (149.5-141). OHS finished with seven individual qualifications for the 4A state championships set for Friday and Saturday at Salina’s Tonys Pizza Event Center, 800 The Midway, Salina.

Richard Blevins (120-weight division), Collin Creach (126), Kael Lane (132), Austin Spangler (160), Tucker Mace (182) and Bret Ferguson (195) were all runners-up in their respective weight classes. Robert Crooks (106) placed third.

Blevins won his first two matches by pin and his semifinal match against Atchison’s Jake Rebandt by 9-0 major decision. He was pinned by top-seeded Ryland Wright of Anderson County in the title match.

Creach won two straight matches by pin to reach the title match against a familiar foe in Paola’s Preston Martin. The top two ranked 4A wrestlers in the state in the 126-pound weight division squared off for the fourth time this season. Martin won the heated match by 1-0 decision, making it the third time he has bested Creach this year.

Lane topped both Baldwins’ Josh Broyles and top-seeded Jacob Stinnett of Fort Scott to reach the title match. There, he fell at the 5:03 mark against Eudora’s Hagan Andrews.

Spangler won his first two matches by pin, followed by a 13-7 victory over Piper’s LaJames White in the semifinals. He was no match for the state’s second ranked 4A 160-pound wrestler in Prairie View’s Gavin Cullor, falling 15-0.

Mace matched up with Anderson County’s Dominic Sutton in the 182-pound title match — a pairing between the state’s fourth and sixth-ranked 4A wrestlers, respectively. Sutton narrowly beat Mace by 8-6 sudden victory. Prior to that, Mace won a pair of matches against Prairie View’s Sam Chambers (6-0 dec) and Fort Scott’s Logan Hall (6-4 dec) to advance.

Ferguson gave a good fight in the 195-pound title match against the state’s top-ranked 4A wrestler in that division — Tongnaoxie’s Connor Searcy. Ferguson fell by 8-3 decision against Searcy, and pinned both Paola’s Isiah Taylor and Prairie View’s Chanz Gerleman in the quarter and semifinals, respectively. Ferguson was ranked fourth in 4A state as of Monday.

ROSSVILLE — Wellsville’s Anthony Signs (152), Ethan Elliot (113), Ethan Ewing (132) and Wyatt Bird (138) all punched their ticket to state over the weekend, with Signs winning an individual regional championship.

Signs went 4-0 to earn the 152-pound weight division title. In the semifinals, he beat Osage City’s Noah Smith by 10-0 decision. He followed that up with a 7-1 win over Silver Lake’s Daigan Krueger in the title match.

Elliot just missed a regional title, falling to top-seeded Tom VanValkenburg of White City by 4-1 decision in the title match. He topped Riley County’s Horace Thelwell by 14-2 major decision in the semifinals.

Also narrowly missing a regional title was Ewing, who lost to Riverside’s Beau Horn by 4-2 decision in the championship. Ewing topped two tough wrestlers by major decision in Rossville’s Colin Culbertson and Silver Lake’s Jason Schroeder to reach the title match.

Bird lost to Wabaunsee’s Eli Mumpower in the quarterfinals by a narrow 6-4 decision. From there, he won four straight matches to claim third-place. That included clipping Sliver Lake’s Peyton Cook by 5-4 decision, and beating Council Grove’s Chase Bacon by 8-2 decision in the third-place match.

Wellsville will wrestle at the 3A-2A-1A state championships set for Friday and Saturday at Fort Hays State’s Gross Memorial Coliseum.
