The West Franklin cross country teams began their season in good fashion Saturday at the Silver Lake Invitational.

The Falcons had 11 runners garner a medal and earned a team first-place plaque.

The West Franklin boys placed five runners in the top 17 en route to the team title.

"The Falcons knew that they needed to put their best foot forward at this meet to set up a season that they have been building toward for two years," West Franklin coach Ryan Hahn said.

The tight battle between Silver Lake and West Franklin needed a tiebreaker to decide the winner. Both teams scored 47 points.

The sixth-place runner results for each team settled it with West Franklin’s Martir Caceres-Ramos finished 23rd to give the Falcons the win.

"Every place mattered," Hahn said.

The Falcons were paced by Kyle Haner in second place. Nathan Hassler took sixth and Kale Link was 10th.

The girls had three runners place in the top 13. Lily Judd finished second. Emma Bailey was 11th and Hope Crabtree was 13th.

"The high school girls made their own statement with all three earning a medal," Hahn said.

He said Judd showed she plans to contend for the winning spot throughout the season. Hahn said Bailey competed well coming off ACL surgery eight months ago. Crabtree had a nice debut, finishing strong.
