LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball is one step closer to completing its revised 2020-21 schedule.
The Jayhawks on Monday revealed all but three of their nonconference contests for the upcoming season, a move that, in conjunction with the Big 12’s own unveiling of its league slate earlier in the day, brought the program within three games of completing its revised 27-game regular season schedule.
Most noteworthy is the inclusion of a Champions Classic matchup with Kentucky, now set for Dec. 1 at a to-be-announced neutral location. An annual showcase that also includes powerhouses Duke and Michigan State, this year’s Champions Classic was originally scheduled for Nov. 10 at United Center in Chicago, but the NCAA’s postponement of the start of its season to Nov. 25 rendered those plans moot.
Other nonconference matchups for the Jayhawks include home dates against North Dakota State (Dec. 5), Creighton (Dec. 8), Omaha (Dec. 11), Tarleton State (Dec. 13) and a Big 12/SEC Challenge at Tennessee (Jan. 30).
KU’s Big 12 slate, meanwhile, will open with at Texas Tech (Dec. 17). That Thursday contest represents the earliest Big 12 start for the Jayhawks in program history and the earliest league game since a Dec. 13, 1986, matchup with Colorado.
Back-to-back home dates against West Virginia (Dec. 22) and Texas (Jan. 2) will precede a road trip to TCU (Jan. 5). Then, after playing host to Oklahoma (Jan. 9), KU will play three of its next four on the road, going to Oklahoma State (Jan. 12) before welcoming Iowa State (Jan. 16) and traveling to Baylor (Jan. 18) and Oklahoma (Jan. 23).
After a home date with TCU (Jan. 26) and the Big 12/SEC Challenge matchup in Knoxville, Tenn., KU will play host to Kansas State (Feb. 2) in the first of two Sunflower Showdown contests in two weeks. A trip to West Virginia (Feb. 6), a home matchup against Oklahoma State (Feb. 8) and a contest at Iowa State (Feb. 13) all set the table for Round 2 with K-State (Feb. 16 in Manhattan). The Jayhawks conclude their Big 12 slate with a home contest against Texas Tech (Feb. 20), a road tilt at Texas (Feb. 22) and a date at Allen Fieldhouse with Baylor (Feb. 17).
Tipoff times remain to-be-announced for all 24 games currently on the Jayhawks’ regular season schedule. The Big 12 Tournament is set for March 10-13 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
In Monday's news release, KU said further details on both the Kentucky matchup and its three remaining nonconference openings will be announced at a later date.
