During its March 30 meeting, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners discussed how it would allocate funds to twelve different local organizations for fiscal year 2023. The County distributes funding to several organizations each year, which are sometimes the exact amount requested and are sometimes less if commissioners decide another amount is more appropriate budgetarily.
During their March 28 study session, the Ottawa City Commission conducted its final two interviews for applicants to fill former commissioner Tom Weigand’s vacant seat. The first applicant, Stan Nichols, worked in electronic security and traveled the country during his career with the National Guard before retiring in 2016.
Ronald “Ron” Paul Valdiviez, 62, of Rantoul, KS, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Freeman Health Center, Joplin, MO, surrounded by his loved ones. Family will meet with friends from 4:00 P.M.

A Celebration of Life will be held 5PM, Saturday, April 2, 2022 in Brooklyn Hall at Enright Gardens: 2351 N. 400 Rd., Edgerton, KS. Private family graveside services were held prior at the Richmond Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Carolyn Christine Gangwish Underwood passed away peacefully on March 4, 2022, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As her shining light flickered and dimmed, Christine was uplifted by beloved family members at her side, singing the hymns she so treasured.
In the mid-2010’s, Joe and Julie Riggins decided to abandon the city life and move with their eight children to rural Franklin County to start fresh. The City of Ottawa Board of Commissioners selected Zachary Clayton to fill a vacant seat left by the resignation of former commissioner Tom Weigand during its March 28 study session. Commissioners agreed that all five applicants were well-qualified for the position, but Clayton’s experience with information technology (IT) is something they haven’t had in a long time and would prove advantageous.
