The Ottawa Arrows have been preparing hard for the American Legion AAA/AA State Tournament. The squad last played on July 12, earning a sweep over the Lawrence Raiders.
The Kansas Children’s Cabinet is currently accepting applications for its Preschool Development Grant to increase the number of childcare facilities for children 30 months and younger in Ottawa. Priority will be given to applicants offering to increase care for infants or increase business hours to be provided during non-traditional hours (before 7 am, after 6 pm, and on weekends).
The Ottawa University women’s flag football team signed an Alaska standout athlete. Kailyn Tabor, Anchorage, Alaska and attended Robert Service High School, is the newest Lady Brave.

Kansas State University women’s basketball program appears to be on the upswing under coach Jeff Mittie. The Wildcats are coming off their fourth NCAA Tournament bid and the sixth overall postseason appearance under Mittie.
Chase Bloomer, who led the Ottawa High School baseball team to a fourth-place finish in the 4A State Tournament, was selected to the first team of the Mid-Plains League, which is a collegiate summer wooden bat league with several member clubs located In Kansas and Missouri. University of Kansas researchers and colleagues at two other universities reported every 5% increase in enrollment in the federal nutrition assistance program for low-income families could reduce the number of children a state placed in foster care or protective services from 7.6% to 14.3%.
Kansas’ largest electric utility, Evergy, must pay $500,000 for allegedly violating consumer protection laws by sponsoring home electrical warranties that provided no benefit. Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office announced the agreement between prosecutors and Evergy in a news release Wednesday.
The Ottawa Kansas Area Chamber of Commerce held a Chamber Coffee at Corner Market on July 22 to recognize the Ottawa Police Department and Ottawa Police Foundation’s work in the commu nity. Programs highlighted included the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE program, which has been a staple of the community for several decades. The Police Department hosts a three-day free DARE camp each summer in Williamsburg for incoming fifth grade students.
