Betty Wendelburg Minnick

On December 3, 2022, Betty Wendelburg Minnick of Ottawa, Kansas passed away at the age of 94. Betty was born March 25, 1928, on the family farm north of Stafford, Kansas to Henry and Anna Wendelburg. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jerome A. Minnick who died in 2019, her parents, brothers Edwin, Albert, and Bob Wendelburg and sisters Norma Wendelburg and Annabell Zeigler. She is survived by her daughters Ann Moore of Denver, Colorado, and Susan Arbuthnot (Bob) of Belleville, Kansas; her son John Minnick of Ottawa, Kansas; as well as seven grandchildren Margaret Moore (Travis), Quentin Moore (Karen), Jonathan Moore, Sarah Lendt (Brian), James Arbuthnot (Jen), Daniel Arbuthnot, Matthew Minnick (Lindsey) and eight great grandchildren. Married for more than 70 years, Betty and her husband Jerome lived the majority of their adult lives in Ottawa where they were active members of the community as well as the First Baptist Church. Betty enjoyed gardening, reading, Bible study, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a P.E.O. Golden Girl and a longtime volunteer at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Always a champion for education, Betty bequeathed her remains to KU Medical Center to support medical education and research. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 16, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 410 S. Hickory Street, Ottawa, KS 66067, preceded by visitation in the church Parlor at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the First Baptist Church of Ottawa, Hope House, 205 W. 17th Street, Ottawa, KS, or LifeCare Center, 121 E. 2nd, Ottawa, KS. Newly established Ottawa FFA Alumni chapter hopes to grow while mentoring local ag students

When agriculture instructor Allyson Gilmore accepted the job as FFA adviser at Ottawa High School earlier this year, she already had plans in mind to not only find ways to re-energize the program, but to mentor and support students with realworld experience. With help from good friend Shawn Turner, a former ag ed teacher himself and a longtime FFA member, Gilmore planted the seed, hoping to start a local FFA Alumni chapter. The idea had been proposed several times, Turner said, but never realized.

Franklin County Farm Bureau receives awards at KFB’s 104th-annual meeting

Franklin County Farm Bureau and its members were recognized for their hard work and dedication to agriculture at Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) 104th annual meeting, Dec. 4-5 in Manhattan. Franklin County achieved Platinum level, the highest possible, in the County Showcase (local efforts in Advocacy, Education & Service). They were also recognized for having made membership gain in both associate and voting members.
