Juneteenth celebrations
Juneteenth has been a celebrated holiday as it represents freedom from slavery by the ratification of the 13th amendment from President Lincoln. In 1865, a few years after slavery was abolished, Texas did not follow the ratification to free slaves in the state until the Secretary of State William Seward announced their freedom. Because the date of this was shared to everyone in the United States on June 19, 1865, this day is celebrated, and proclaimed an official holiday in Ottawa by the commission.
