Jack Wray (left) and Ray Shumate have been friends for over 40 years, and Jack felt like it was time his buddy was recognized as one our Unsung Heroes – and we couldn’t agree more. Ray has been instrumental in overseeing all of the work and planning it takes for the annual Veterans Memorial exhibit in City Park.

Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Readers, The days of not even whispering the word Christmas until after the pumpkin pie was served are long gone. Cornucopias, pumpkins and other Thanksgiving décor may be front and center now, but Christmas trees and twinkly lights replaced Trick-Or-Treater’s glow sticks in store aisles long before October 31st. The mingling of celebrations rubs some traditionalists the wrong way but their resistance often dissipates when faced by good cheer. Or their naysaying is simply overrun by logistics, the game of TWISTER we all must play these days just dealing with “life” , let alone celebrate a holiday.

WHS takes first at Washburn math event

The Washburn University math department hosted 190 students from 25 local high schools for its annual Math Day on Tuesday. Students participated in math testing and the “Mathnificient Race,” a scavenger hunt on the Washburn University campus for information required to solve a sequence of problems as quickly as possible.

From failure to fabulous

Turkey is the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinners. The National Turkey Federation estimates approximately 46 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving each year, followed by 22 million turkeys at Christmastime.
