ACLU of Kansas intervenes on behalf of voters in multiple counties ahead of primary election

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas has helped resolve election-related concerns in counties around the state in advance of next week’s primary. The organization runs a nonpartisan “election protection” hotline to ensure safe and accessible voting, and it will deploy trained poll observers next week.

KU students receive honor roll distinction

Franklin County students were among the more than 6,200 undergraduate students at the University of Kansas to earn honor roll distinction for the spring 2022 semester. The honor roll comprises undergraduates who meet requirements in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and in the schools of Architecture & Design, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Journalism & Mass Communications, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Professional Studies and Social Welfare.

Forgivable loan application available for new and expanding childcare businesses in Ottawa

The Kansas Children’s Cabinet is currently accepting applications for its Preschool Development Grant to increase the number of childcare facilities for children 30 months and younger in Ottawa. Priority will be given to applicants offering to increase care for infants or increase business hours to be provided during non-traditional hours (before 7 am, after 6 pm, and on weekends).

Evergy pays $500K to settle consumer protection investigation into worthless warranties

Kansas’ largest electric utility, Evergy, must pay $500,000 for allegedly violating consumer protection laws by sponsoring home electrical warranties that provided no benefit. Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office announced the agreement between prosecutors and Evergy in a news release Wednesday.

KU research finds association between a state’s generosity with food benefits, child welfare

University of Kansas researchers and colleagues at two other universities reported every 5% increase in enrollment in the federal nutrition assistance program for low-income families could reduce the number of children a state placed in foster care or protective services from 7.6% to 14.3%.
