Donuts for Do-Gooders: July 21

Congratulations to Robin for being one of this week’s “unsung heroes” and recipient for Donuts for Do-Gooders! Robin has worked in the County Appraiser’s office for 24 years. She was nominated anonymously, and the person who nominated her says she goes out of her way to help others and always goes above and beyond for our community. Robin has been married to her husband, Bill, since 1985 and they have one daughter and two grandsons. Keep up the good work, Robin!

The student doctor; a complement to patient care

As a clinical professor at my state’s medical school, I frequently have medical students seeing patients with me in clinic. While the majority of patients are happy to allow student involvement, some decline. This makes me wonder what misconceptions lead patients to be averse to trainees participating at their clinic visits or hospital bedsides. In my experience, the presence of learners has a positive influence on our work in the clinic and hospital.

Kansas health department alerts communities to increased risk of West Nile Virus infections

TOPEKA — Communities across Kansas are at an increased risk for West Nile virus infections, the state health department announced Friday. West Nile virus is the most common cause of mosquito-borne illnesses in the country and spreads from the bug’s bite rather than person-to-person contact.
