Franklin County commissioners approved a motion to shut down the detention facility of the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center ( JDC) during their meeting on June 1. The decision came after a meeting with County Administrator Derek Brown, attorney Brandon Jones and the county’s Juvenile Services Director, Ken Halliburton, on May 25.
The Ottawa Police Department is asking the public for information regarding an incident involving the American and Prisoner of War (POW) flags at the post office. The Department says some time Sunday night or Monday morning, which was Memorial Day, the rope holding the flags was cut.
The Ottawa Library and Kansas State University Frontier Extension are partnering to offer a threeday cycling class for second through fourth graders in the area. The class, which is being offered through the library’s summer reading program, will be held in two sessions: the first session is from June 6-10 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 am.
The legislature was called back on May 23. In an unusual move, a motion was made to end the 2022 session, sine die. Even though it was an abrupt end to session, we were able to complete some important work that day.
The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has identified the suspect in a hit-and-run accident that killed a ten-year-old girl last month, Sheriff Jay Armbrister said. “The driver of the van was identified immediately after locating the van, and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of this person.” Armbrister said.

The first time I visited Bill Wittenbrink’s home was the summer before I reached 9th grade. I went to school with one of his grandchildren, and I was invited to a small party to go swim at their pond. That was my first time meeting Bill and his family, and he made an immediate impression on me. I had never seen such a special place for someone to call home. The property is beautifully secluded, with plenty of trees for cover. There is a pond that sits in front of the house, and a path leading to a large dock accompanied by a small table and set of chairs. To the far right is Bill’s bridge, resting above the pond.
Pam Harris has been appointed the Franklin County Health Department’s Public Health Assistant Director, the organization announced Thursday. Harris was previously employed at AdventHealth Ottawa for 43 and held a variety of positions, most recently as the Director of Physician Enterprises.
