Beginning this weekend through the July 4 holiday, drivers in Ottawa can expect to see an increased police presence as the Ottawa Police Department joins 160 other departments across the state in enforcing the 2022 Kansas Click it or Ticket campaign.
The Sunflower Piecemakers Quilt Guild donated a portion of the proceeds from its miniature quilt auction to two local organizations during its May 16 meeting. The auction was held during the guild’s annual quilt show on April 23.
The Ottawa Police Department and Elizabeth Layton Center have filled the positions of Crisis Co-Responder and Community Police Officer, the organizations announced Wednesday. In October 2021, OPD was awarded a federal grant of $150,000 to create the Community Policing Unit.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in his wife’s murder on May 16. That evening around 7:30 pm, LPD officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of West 6th Street, where they found 25-year-old Regan Gibbs, who was wounded and declared deceased at the scene.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is working to identify the driver of a van that struck and killed a nine-year-old girl riding with her grandfather on his motorcycle on K-10 last weekend. On May 14 around 5:15 pm, deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 1300 block of East 1900 Road on the Highway 10 ramp between Lawrence and Eudora.

During their May 18 meeting, Franklin County commissioners discussed the opportunity to partner with the City of Wellsville for a new ambulance station. According to County Administrator Derek Brown, the city recently purchased a building that it plans to remodel into a new police station.
