Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous stranger, Franklin County high schoolers had the opportunity to score a free prom dress or suit from Thriftopia in Ottawa last week. According to Thriftopia’s marketing and store manager Tiffany Griffin, the donor explicitly wanted her money to go towards prom outfits for high schoolers in the area.
Ottawa University held a Career Day on Wednesday with over 30 area businesses in attendance. Students walked through Gangwish Library and spoke with companies about fulltime, part-time, and summer jobs as well as internship and graduate studies opportunities.
Central Heights Elementary School held its annual student, parent and staff talent show on Friday. This year’s theme was “The Greatest Show on Earth at the Greatest School on Earth”. To go with the circus theme, Victory the Viking Clown and King the Ringleader were the night’s MCs.
The City of Ottawa Board of Commissioners selected Zachary Clayton to fill a vacant seat left by the resignation of former commissioner Tom Weigand during its March 28 study session. Commissioners agreed that all five applicants were well-qualified for the position, but Clayton’s experience with information technology (IT) is something they haven’t had in a long time and would prove advantageous.
In the mid-2010’s, Joe and Julie Riggins decided to abandon the city life and move with their eight children to rural Franklin County to start fresh. Seventy-five goats, 60 chickens, eight ducks, nine dogs, three cats and one business later, the family is facing its biggest challenge to date as it celebrates the Goat Milk Soap Store’s fifth anniversary.
During their March 28 study session, the Ottawa City Commission conducted its final two interviews for applicants to fill former commissioner Tom Weigand’s vacant seat. The first applicant, Stan Nichols, worked in electronic security and traveled the country during his career with the National Guard before retiring in 2016.
During its March 30 meeting, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners discussed how it would allocate funds to twelve different local organizations for fiscal year 2023. The County distributes funding to several organizations each year, which are sometimes the exact amount requested and are sometimes less if commissioners decide another amount is more appropriate budgetarily.
The Sunflower Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have it’s annual quilt show April 23. A quilt will be given away that day by a drawing.
