The Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce held a Chamber Coffee on Friday morning to introduce Prairie Paws Animal Shelter’s new executive director, Vanessa Cowie. She replaces Melissa Reed, who left the position to serve as City Clerk.

During the March 16 Ottawa City Commission meeting, Director of Utilities Dennis Tharpe apologized for what he called between community members and authorities regarding a city ordinance. According to Tharp, community members have approached him and commissioners to express their concerns about a new ordinance requiring the removal of artificial decorations at the cemetery starting March 1.
Central Heights School District and New Horizon Ranch in Rantoul have partnered to create an educational enrichment program called New Heights, which serves middle and high school students in the district by teaching them valuable life lessons using New Horizon’s therapeutic horses.

A 24-year-old man was injured with an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in the late afternoon hours on March 17, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department says. According to FCSO, the incident occurred in the 2400 block of Labette Road around 11:40 am.
During the March 16 Franklin County Commission meeting, commissioners heard from Public Works Director David Lee about several projects his department would like to have approved as spring begins. The first order of business Lee mentioned was approving a public hearing to consider vacating a section of Alabama Road that belongs to a private landowner.
