Harris announces private investments in Central America WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday announced $1.2 billion in commitments from international businesses to support the economies and social infrastructure of Central American nations, as she works to address what the White House terms the “root causes” of migration to the United States. Harris was tapped by President Joe Biden to work to counter the social, economic and political forces that drive migrants and asylum-seekers to the U.S., including many who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Some Republicans eye spending limits

Kansas is having a bumper year for tax revenue, and a Republican-led group of lawmakers are brainstorming ways to limit government spending. As state coffers are flush with cash and politicians ponder how to spend the windfall, the Legislature’s Special Committee on Taxation is weighing tax and expenditure limitation policies.

Community-run nonprofit donates goods for those in need

A nonprofit organization run by the owner of a popular downtown Ottawa business is going the extra mile to help those in need stay warm this winter. The Blessing Box Foundation will be tying scarves around poles downtown throughout the month of December. Anyone is free to take a scarf if they need one, or leave a scarf if they have one to spare. At the end of the month, the scarves will be taken down and placed in one of the foundation's eponymous Blessing Boxes, which are located all over town.

Income is up, but Americans focus on inflation

WASHINGTON – Americans’ overall income has accelerated since the pandemic, but so has inflation – and a new poll finds that far more people are noticing the higher prices than the pay gains. Two-thirds say their household costs have risen since the pandemic, compared with only about a quarter who say their incomes have increased, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
