RALEIGH, N.C. – The National Association of Black Journalists has given UNC-Chapel Hill and one of the school’s megadonors its annual Thumbs Down Award, recognizing efforts that went against the mission of the organization.
Richmond’s Pamela Peters was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Peters was initiated at The University of Kansas.

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Jason and Aga Jones loved the magnificent oak tree that was once the centerpiece of their backyard. In 2013 – a year after they bought their home in Takoma Park, Maryland – they restored a circular stone retaining wall around the base of the tree. Former Ottawa University Choir Director Stanley DeFries passed away November 24 at the age of 92, according to the Lawrence Journal-World. DeFries grew up in Muncie, Kansas and became involved in vocal and instrumental groups as a child.
America needs to rethink and reduce the way it generates plastics because so much of the material is littering the oceans and other waters, the National Academy of Sciences says in a new report. The United States, the world’s top plastics waste producer, generates more than 46 million tons yearly, and about 2.2 billion pounds ends up in the world’s oceans, according to the academy’s report.

Fossils found in Chile are from a strange-looking dog-sized dinosaur species that had a unique slashing tail weapon, scientists reported Wednesday. Some dinosaurs had spiked tails they could use as stabbing weapons and others had tails with clubs.

Since this variant is still relatively new, it's not yet known just how transmissible or contagious it is, or if it's vaccineresistant.
The Ottawa Police Department is warning the community about a recent string of auto burglaries in the western part of town. According to OPD, the burglaries occurred from Canterbury Ct. to 19th and Ash on Wednesday evening. Residents of these areas are being asked to check their security cameras in an effort to identify any suspects in the case.
