GOP lawmakers tie care for disabled Kansans to their opposition of Medicaid expansion
TOPEKA — Several Republican lawmakers have sworn against expanding state health care coverage, arguing that they are “laser-focused” on fixing long wait times for thousands of the state’s disabled residents in need of health care first.The same lawmakers now say they will not fund more than a small fraction of state-funded waivers for disabilities services each year — an amount that represents the most amount of funding the waitlists have gotten in years, but a figure that won’t keep the lists from growing, let alone providing more Kansans relief.“Our work is not done,” said House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Wichita Republican, in an announcement of funding.

New Kansas flat tax proposal would mainly benefit state’s top 20 percent of earners, analysis shows
TOPEKA — A revamped flat tax plan touted by Kansas Senate lawmakers on Tuesday would cost the state nearly $650 million annually once phased in, give 40 percent of the benefits to the state’s top 20 percent and reap billionaire Charles Koch a half-million dollar windfall, according to independent analysis.During the Senate Committee on Assessment and Taxation hearing, Republican lawmakers claimed the latest version, encapsulated as Senate Bill 539, would address Kansans’ needs.“It is a product of listening to people and trying to come up with the best solution,” said committee chairwoman Sen.
