Willa Lou Sawyer

Willa Lou Sawyer, 86, of Baldwin City, KS went to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at her home surrounded by her children. She was born August 10, 1936 to Eleanor (Oliver) McCauley and Abby McCauley in Ottawa, KS. To celebrate Willa’s life, a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 700 Chapel Street, Baldwin City, KS 66006. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. The family will receive friends before the service at 10 a.m. at the Lighthouse Baptist Church. John W. Rea

John W. Rea passed away, November 15, 2022, with his loving wife, Lorna, by his side. He was 82. John was a lifelong resident of Ottawa, Ks. After attending Ottawa schools, he joined the Air Force in 1958. John barbered 40 years in downtown Ottawa, making the men of Ottawa handsome. On May 10, 1964, John married Phyllis Martin and they were blessed with 5 children. They later divorced. John was united in marriage on September 21, 1996 to Lorna Cruse. They enjoyed 26 wonderful years of marriage.

C.T. Taul C.T. Taul, 98, of Baldwin City, KS passed away Sunday November 27, 2022 at He was born November 9, 1924 in Paradise, MO, the son of Wilbert “Burton” Taul and Myrtle (Hibbard) Taul. C.T. moved with his family in 1932 to the Baldwin City area and remained there his entire life. He attended Independence County Grade School and graduated from Baldwin High School with the class of 1942. After graduating from high school C.T. was in partnership with his father and brother, Joe Ed in farming the family farm and hauling milk to Bennett’s Creamery in Ottawa. C.T. loved his profession and enjoyed the fact that he worked with family, especially his brother, Joe Ed. As C.T. and Joe Ed’s families expanded, the partnership was dissolved, and they each pursued their individual livestock and farming operations. On August 12, 1945 C.T. was united in marriage to Betty Jean Kinyon at First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City. They lived on the same farm for sixty-six years together until the death of Betty Jean in 2012. C.T. was a loving and devoted husband and cared for Betty Jean during her final days. They enjoyed their time together and were a lovely couple to be around. C.T. was an avid sports fan and was an expert coon hunter. He played baseball and softball in his younger years and later loved to play golf. He enjoyed his farming and gardening and enjoyed feeding and watching the Martin birds on the back patio at the house. He was a member of the A.S.C.S. and was Chairman and a committeeman on the board for sixteen years. He was also a member of the Farmers Home Association for nine years and a member of the Worden United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, Tommy Taul and his companion, Sherie Taylor, of Manhattan, KS, Bobby Taul and his wife, Terry, of Holton, KS; five grandchildren, Kelly Taul (Mike Charlson) of Gardner, KS, Wylie Taul (Ben Cosman) of Baldwin, Baylee Teagarden (Scott) of LaCygne, KS, Kaylee Cowles (Brenn) of Topeka, KS, Tanner Ta

Martin Gary Floyd

Martin Gary Floyd, 71, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2022 at his home in Lawrence, Kansas. Martin was born on May 28, 1951, in Ottawa, Kansas, to Max Floyd, a former Navy pilot, and Marjorie (Brink) Floyd. His family included his three brothers Mike, Mark, and Miles. After graduating from Ottawa High School, he furthered his education at Ottawa University studying Spanish and political science. At University he toured Mexico where he first fell in love with photography, including 8mm cinematography. Martin lived and worked in various small towns in eastern Kansas before starting a successful career as a project manager for the Lawrence-based E&E Display Group, managing the creation of advertising posters and standees from design to production. Later he became a project manager for the north Kansas City company Vanguard Packaging, from which he retired in 2020. Martin met his wife Rebecca Lowrance in a local theatre troupe. They were married in Ottawa, Kansas on April 12, 1974. Their family grew to include their daughter Emily Lowrance-Floyd and eventually they settled in Lawrence, Kansas. Martin loved to go camping and particularly loved puttering around and working with RV equipment. He was a self-taught mechanic who enjoyed maintaining older vehicles, including a thirty-year old pickup truck and at one time a 1962 Dodge Lancer inherited from his grandmother and eventually passed down to his daughter. Martin was an avid collector of antique cameras, including all forms of Polaroid equipment. His collection of cameras was truly remarkable and extensive. Martin enjoyed movies too, a trait he passed down to his daughter. He loved classic comedies from the 1950s and 1960s (mostly because of the old cars) and modern sci-fi. He would collect various formats of films he remembered seeing as a child in Ottawa to play on his retro A/V equipment. John William Netherland

John William Netherland of Ottawa, KS passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the age of 91 years. John was born on July 21, 1931 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Gladys Seaman and John Lanning Netherland. John graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, MO with the class of 1949. In 1953, he graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Missouri. After college, he moved to Ottawa, KS where he was the owner and operator of Silkville Ranch in Williamsburg, KS, a large ranch devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle. John continued ranching for over 60 years. He was well-respected among the cattle industry where he was President of the Kansas City Hereford Club, as well as a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, American Hereford Association and Franklin County Livestock Association. In 1958, John was united in marriage to Barbara Shader in Ottawa, KS. They shared 64 years of marriage and were parents to three daughters. Dale Arthur Schamle

Dale Arthur Schamle passed away on November 3, 2022, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on November 24, 1934, in Vassar, Kansas, the son of Charles J. and Julia (Fawl) Schamle. He was raised and attended school in the Ottawa, Kansas, area, helping his father on the family farm before and after school. He was a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, in Hutchinson, forgoing many lifelong friendships through the church members. He was a truck driver for Graves Truckline, retiring after 35 years of service and millions of miles logged. He received multiple awards for his safe driving. After retirement, he worked at Holy Cross Catholic School as a maintenance man, where he enjoyed interacting with the students and staff. Dale enjoyed traveling, camping and boating, always with family along for adventures. He arranged a legendary outing at Pomona Lake, where the entire family, including aunts, uncles, cousins and assorted friends would gather for camping, skiing, laughing and making memories. Dale also enjoyed woodworking and classic cars and was content to spend hours in his wood shop or garage working on a new project. On February 5, 1955, Dale married the love of his life, K. Darlene (Hoffman) Schamle, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ottawa, Kansas. They were blessed with 60 years together before Darlene’s passing in 2016. Survivors include his sons, Douglas (Martha) Schamle and John (Jody) Schamle; daughter, Cathy (Doug) McMurphy, all of Hutchinson, Kansas; sister, Darlene (Cecil) Cook; 9 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Wayne Everett Luginsland

Wayne Everett Luginsland passed away peacefully at 1:38 PM on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at his home surrounded by family in Waverly, Kansas. Born on March 24, 1942, at Newman Hospital in Emporia, he was the eldest son to Paul and Treva Luginsland, and was followed by his younger brother, Richard (Sherre, Kansas City, MO). Wayne dedicated his life to his Christian faith and the love his family and friends unconditionally. On December 23, 1962, Wayne married his soulmate, Connie Forbeck, and together they raised four daughters: Teri (Michael Vaughn, Garnett), Dawn (Chris Mesa, Garden City) Susan (Terry Tinich, Mesa, AZ), and Shelley (Daniel Coughlin, Lyndon), James VanSchaick, former Son-in-Law, and opened his home to an exchange student from Norway, Stig Nordal. Wayne was also blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Katie, Hillary, Adam, Aaron, Treiy, Andrew, Kai, Joshua, Joseph, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Machelle, Christina, Junior, Dahlia, and Caden. Wayne attended Americus High School and graduated in 1960. Wayne honorably served Army National Guard from 1960 to 1966. Wayne worked his entire career at Didde Graphics in Emporia until his retirement. Following his retirement, Wayne spent much of his time in his wood shop or the outdoors, but if a family member, a neighbor, or a perfect stranger needed anything, Wayne would give them the shirt off his back. Wayne will always be remembered as a kind and compassionate man who loved everyone. Services will be held at Prairie View United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 5th, 2022, at 11:00 AM.
