Evelyn Kay (Millard) Shepard

Evelyn Kay (Millard) Shepard, 76, of Williamsburg, KS passed away Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Richmond Healthcare and Rehab in Richmond, KS. She was born February 21, 1946 in Baltimore, MD. She was raised by her parents Woodrow and Vada Millard in Beltsville, MD. She was later reunited with her birth mother, Elizabeth Carper. In 1964, Evelyn graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville. MD. She later attended Neosho County Community College in Ottawa, KS.

Jacquelyn “Jacquie” B. Smith

Jacquelyn “Jacquie” B. Smith, 100, of Lenexa, KS and formerly of Ottawa, KS passed away peacefully Monday, October 3, 2022 at her daughter’s home in Lenexa, KS. She was born May 11, 1922 in Centerville, KS the daughter of Harry and Bernice (Boydston) Quaintance. She graduated from Parker High School, Parker, KS. Jacquelyn majored in Botany at Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS before World War II. Jacquie was united in marriage to James William “J.W., Smitty” Smith on January 31, 1943 in Centerville, KS. They shared over sixty-two years of marriage before the death of her husband on August 14, 2005. Jacquie and Smitty lived in Fort Pierce, Florida where he was stationed with the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, they moved back “home” to Centerville, KS where Jacquie was a homemaker. In 1954, they moved to Garnett, KS where Jacquie worked at Dr. White’s/Dr. Dougherty’s office and later worked for the Anderson County Extension office. In 1965, the family moved to Ottawa, KS. Jacquie worked at Ottawa University as an administrative assistant for twenty years before retiring in 1987. From 1995 to 2005, Jacquie provided care in their home for her beloved husband who had been diagnosed with parkinson’s years earlier. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, KS; United Methodist Women; Sequel Club; Four Seasons Garden Club and Ottawa University Women’s Club. She also volunteered at Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Ottawa, KS. Jacquie enjoyed gardening and canning. She was a seamstress and taught her daughters to sew. She was a fabulous cook and will be remembered for her sensational pies. Jacquie dearly loved her family and had the privilege of many fun times with her grandchildren who all have such beautiful memories of her and her extravagant love for them. Claron R. Cordle

Claron R. Cordle, 92, of Ottawa, KS, went to be with the Lord. Friday, October 7, 2022 at Rock Creek of Ottawa, KS. He passed peacefully while his daughter was holding his hand. He was born December 27, 1929 in Welda, KS the son of Kenneth and Ina (Willis) Cordle. He graduated from the Wellsville High School in Wellsville, KS with the Class of 1948. After graduating high school, Claron worked at Bennett’s Creamery in Ottawa, KS. He later worked in the Oil Fields as his father did before him. Claron worked at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, KS as a Business Manager. In 1963, he worked at the Gas Service Company in Ottawa, KS as an Office Manager, retiring in 1988. He was united in marriage to Virginia “Ginnie” Laws at the North Baptist Church in Ottawa, KS on July 22, 1951. They shared sixty-nine years of marriage before Ginnie’s passing on December 4, 2020. He was a former member of the North Baptist Church, Ottawa, a current member of Hope Anthem Church, Ottawa, and a member of Gideons International. He enjoyed square dancing, bowling, golfing and was always excited to attend a Bill Gaither concert with his sweetheart Ginnie. Claron was a handy “fix-it” man and worked at his brother Lyle’s hardware store, Mr. C’s, part-time after he retired. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his daughter’s and later his grandchildren’s activities, cheering them on in the bleachers during their many sporting events. Claron and Ginnie enjoyed gathering with friends, laughing and playing dominoes. Claron was a kind, caring, faithful servant of God and greeted everyone with a smile. Claron is survived by a daughter, Denise K. Lane, grandson, Matthew R. Lane, granddaughter, Kayley M. Lane, great granddaughters, Lucy and Catherine Lane all of Lawrence, KS; a foster daughter, Denise L. Judith I. Pope

Judith I. Pope, 82, of Excelsior Springs, MO, passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022 at her home surrounded by family. Ms. Pope was born July 14, 1940 in Ottawa, KS, to George and Florence Pope. She was survived by her son, Jerry Kline (Shar); daughter, Susan Bond (Kevin); grandchildren, Carrie Hammond (Jeff), Stuart Kline, and Lucian Bond; and great grandchildren, Jaylin Sayers and Connor Bond. Judy and her family were blessed to have an additional daughter/sister, Mary Estes, who is a longtime friend and caregiver to Judy. Judy taught school in Excelsior Springs school district for thirty plus years, was a cheerleading sponsor and was a coach for the ESHS dance team (Tigerettes), which she lovingly referred to as “her girls”. She retired from the school district in 1998 and upon retirement continued working in retail at Stage/Goody’s in Excelsior Springs for 17 years. A memorial, Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs, in Excelsior Springs, MO.
