Melva ”Jane” Shields

Melva Jane Shields, 88, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away peacefully on February 28th, 2022 at Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida. The Celebration of Life will be held on April 23rd, 2022 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 401 W 13th Street, Ottawa, Kansas 66067. Visitation starting at 10:00am, followed by the Service at 11:00am.

Jane was born on the Folks’ family homestead in Louisburg, Kansas on September 27th. 1933. She was the daughter of Melvin and Versa Folks. She attended West Wendy Schoolhouse and graduated from Wellsville High School in Wellsville, Kansas. On September 20th, 1954 she married Robert Shields at the Folks family farm in Wellsville. They shared 48 years of marriage together before he passed away on March 6th, 2003.

Jane lovingly raised four daughters and enjoyed having neighborhood friends around the house. She enjoyed boating with family, playing dominos, cribbage and cards with family and friends.

She was a member of a number of service organizations and was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in outreach to seniors unable to attend services. She enjoyed hosting and entertaining family and community groups.

She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them.

Jane will be remembered as a sweet and kind woman who was beloved by her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her youngest brother Danny Folks of Wellsville, Kansas, daughters Julie (Mike) Quinn of Grenada, West Indies, Janet Murphy (Rick Eggemeyer) of Orange Park Florida, Joan (Bryn) Wiley of Naperville, Illinois, and Lorie (James) Weaver of Junction City, Kansas. Grandchildren Ryan Quinn, Alexandra Quinn, Jacob Eggemeyer, Samantha Murphy, Andrew Eggemeyer, Zachary Eggemeyer, Brandon Wiley, Katie Wiley, Andrea Lauppe, Sarah Dieter, and great grandchildren Owen, Koltyn, Brooklyn, Nash, Cora, Eleanor, Jace, Lucas, Henry, Liam, and Sage and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her husband Bob, brother Larry Folks, sisters Elaine Coughnour and Alice Nitcher, her parents, and grandson Matthew Eggemeyer.
